Why I am participating
Thursday 28th NovAs a hospital social worker in women’s and newborns, every day I have the privilege of hearing the voices of women as they navigating some of the most challenging and vulnerable times in their lives. Receiving referrals from doctors, midwives, and other members of our team, social workers are called to assist and support women with incredibly complex social backgrounds. Many face issues such as homelessness, mental illness, substance and alcohol use, child protection concerns, complex trauma, sexual assault, and domestic violence (DV).The sheer number of referrals involving DV and violence against women is shocking. Some of these women are just beginning to recognise the signs of their partner’s abuse—perhaps tactics of coercive control that have escalated during pregnancy. Others have fled their perpetrators, requesting anonymity, or having just relocating from other cities for their safety. Many remain trapped in fear, unsure how to escape—or terrified of what their partners might do to them or their children if they leave or seek help. The abuse these women endure—most often at the hands of the very men meant to love and protect them, the fathers of their children—is chilling. The pain they carry is unimaginable, yet they endure, often in silence, too ashamed or afraid to speak out, fearing the repercussions of disclosure.Sometimes, we are the first people they confide in. We meet these women at moments of profound vulnerability—often just before or after childbirth, when separation from their perpetuator may offer a fleeting opportunity to disclose the abuse We have beside women as they share the horrors they’ve endured: threats, isolation, humiliation, and immense control. Too many recount how, even while pregnant, they were thrown downstairs, punched, kicked, dragged by their hair, strangled, burned, or worse. Hearing these stories is heartbreaking. Yet, I am continuously inspired by their courage and resilience.
We are driven to support these women in taking steps toward safety. There are still days I feel disheartened by the sheer prevalence of violence. Asking ourselves, where do we go from here? These moments remind me that real change requires broader systemic action. This is why I am participating in the UN’s 16 Days of Activism campaign which raises awareness and funds to address the violence that harms and kills women in Australia and across the world. By walking and running 110km over these 16 days, I hope to shine a light on this critical issue and support the services and advocates working tirelessly to end violence against women. Globally, a woman is killed every ten minutes - I am walking for women to be safe, everywhere and always
