This is for women and girls everywhere....
Hi family and friends, from November 25th, I’m going to be walking for a cause that is close to my heart.
Every woman and girl around the world, deserves to feel Safe. Everywhere. Always. – at home, at the gym, even online - and that is why I’m joining UN Women Australia in the walk to end violence against women and girls.
Help me reach my fundraising goal and we can help to build a better future for women and girls around the world.
My Updates
Introduction
Wednesday 13th NovHello,
My name is Sarah (she/her) and I am a former Lawyer with over a decade of experience. During my career, I witnessed firsthand the pervasive gender-based violence and discrimination that permeates our society. Personally, I've faced unfair treatment due to my sex, which only aided my decision to leave a career I had dedicated myself to.
The alarming reality is that family and intimate partner violence remains the leading cause of serious injury, disability, and death for women in Australia (White Ribbon Australia).
Research by Professor True et al. at Monash University presents the statistics of gender-based violence, encompassing systemic discrimination, political oppression, online misogyny, domestic abuse, and femicide.
In 2023, there was a 28% increase in women murdered by their partners. Indigenous women face a disproportionately higher homicide rate of 3.07 per 100,000, compared to 0.45 per 100,000 for non-Indigenous women.
It is crucial to acknowledge the historical invisibility of violence against women, which was only formally recognized as a human rights violation by the UN in 1992.
Every week, on average, one woman is killed by their intimate male partner in Australia.
One woman. Every. Week.
I join the #SafeEverywhereAlways movement, led by UN Women Australia, to raise awareness about this horrifying epidemic. Every woman I know has experienced some form of harrasment, violence, oppression, abuse, misogyny and/or discrimination by a man or other males. This normalization of violence against women is unacceptable. We must demand systemic change to ensure women's safety and equality.
Collective action is imperative and will save lives.
