Hi family and friends, from November 25th, I’m going to be walking for a cause that is close to my heart. 

Every woman and girl around the world, deserves to feel Safe. Everywhere. Always. – at home, at the gym, even online - and that is why I’m joining UN Women Australia in the walk to end violence against women and girls.

Why am I doing this?

I work as a social worker in a hospital with women who have just had babies. This should be a day filled with joy, love and family, but so often it is not. Every day I have the privilege of sitting with women and hearing their stories. Unfortunately, many of these stories include experiences of violence often perpetrated by partners and other family members. Sometimes, I am the first person these women have had the opportunity to confide in. Meeting them at a moment of profound vulnerability, they have a fleeting moment away from their perpetrator to disclose violence.

I have sat with women as they share the horrors that have been perpetrated against them: threats, isolation, humiliation, and control. Too many tell me that they have been thrown down stairs, punched, kicked, dragged by their hair, strangled, burned, or worse - and this has gotten worse during pregnancy.

Yet they endure. They have courage, resilience, and motivation to create a better life for themselves and their children. I simply don't know how they do it. There strength is quite honestly awe-inspiring.

The fact that a major part of my job as a social worker for pregnant women and new mothers is responding to domestic and family violence demonstrates that this is not an individual issue. This is much bigger than the women I work with and myself. Violence against women is an epidemic in our society and we need to make change at all levels. That is why I am walking 100kms as part of UN Women's Safe Everywhere Always fundraiser.
